Uses & Things To Consider When Buying Acme Thread Tap


ACME threads taps are devised to let rotary and transversing motion on machines; and are also used in jacks, valves, presses and other mechanisms where heavy loads are encountered. These threads are characterized by a 29° included angle. These typically require specialized engineering and design due to the nature and severity of the cut required in producing Acme threads.

 The thread tap is normally required for lead screws that are shaped to offer high strength and accuracy. Acme thread tap is the most popular trapezoidal thread form worldwide for lead screws. Although square threads are the most efficient ones, they are difficult to produce.  Because an Acme 29° angle is easier to produce, both in external and internal threads, which makes them less expensive. They can be produced with multiple start threads, left-hand threads, and self-centering threads.

When making a selection of acme thread tap, consider below-mentioned pointers:
·       Have a complete acme thread tap details including size, class of fit, pitch, number of starts, right or left hand, etc.
·       Length of the thru-holes. If an extra long nut has been specified to improve axial support, consider counterboring a portion of the nut to the OD of the screw thread.
·       Extra-long thru-holes are difficult to tap, may require a special and more expensive tap, and are likely to present fit-up problems.
·       The direction of tapping i.e. vertical or horizontal
·       Type of tap feed which means lead screw or manual feed

Acme thread tap is extremely useful for the lead screw shaft of various assemblies. In Particular, for assemblies that move efficiently either for load-bearing or accuracy.  We can see those tread taps in the lead screw shafts in some equipment; however, most are hidden from sight.  For example, lifting pallets, marking and labeling machines, medical diagnostics, and personal mobility, off-road equipment, and machine tools, all require load-bearing or accurate movement which can be provided by devices that use acme thread tap mechanism.
